A strange video featuring a Tesla Optimus robot experiencing a malfunction and toppling over while serving drinks at an event is quickly gaining popularity online. The occurrence happened at the “Autonomy Visualized” event hosted at Tesla’s Miami store. As reported by Electrek, the event aimed to showcase Tesla’s “Autopilot technology and Optimus.” This mishap could prove embarrassing for Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who has presented Optimus in several demonstrations, one of which featured the robot performing Kung Fu. Musk stated, “AI, not tele-operated,” in response to footage highlighting the robot’s capabilities. He was alluding to earlier displays where Optimus was controlled remotely by a person. However, during the “Autonomy Visualized” event, Optimus appeared to lack autonomy. The video was first posted on Reddit and is now circulating across social media platforms, including Musk’s X platform. It shows an Optimus robot serving water bottles, inadvertently toppling them over, and then suddenly malfunctioning and falling backward. The most peculiar part of the video is the way the robot’s arms and hands move as it starts to lean backward, mimicking the action of someone taking off a VR headset. VR headsets are utilized by Tesla teleoperators to manage the robots. A headset malfunction wouldn’t be the first hurdle for Tesla’s Optimus robots, which Musk has referred to as his “robot army.” This video prompts concerns regarding the practical effectiveness of this army. While Musk advocates for autonomous robots, it appears that Optimus might still be under remote control, at least during public demonstrations designed to display their autonomy.
