The Budget-Friendly Tesla: The True Significance of the Model Y

During a Q2 earnings call, Tesla CEO Elon Musk revealed that the company’s expected “lower cost” new vehicle will be a simplified version of the Model Y. Information about this car is surfacing now. Tesla fan Luca Presti shared a Chinese video that showcases some modifications to the more “affordable” Model Y.

Presti highlights differences from the current Model Y, such as the use of less expensive materials and the elimination of luxury features to lower production costs. Significant exterior modifications include the removal of the glass roof, which is substituted with a solid panel that matches the vehicle’s color, and the deletion of front and rear light bars. The reflective section of the tailgate is also absent. Although there have been speculations regarding a shorter wheelbase and reduced legroom, the video Presti provided indicates it mirrors the current Model Y.

On the inside, the rear display has been taken out, the seats are partly upholstered in textile instead of vegan leather, and the count of speakers has been diminished. The center console has been segmented into two sections, and even coat hooks have been eliminated. NotaTeslaApp has compiled a list of modifications in the lower-cost Model Y, which includes features not revealed in leaks, such as the absence of heated and ventilated seats and power recline for the rear seats.

Previously, Tesla introduced a simplified Model 3 in Mexico with similar revisions. It remains unclear whether the new, less expensive Model Y will be broadly accessible. The worth of this pared-down Model Y is contingent upon its pricing. Tesla’s standard models present premium features typically absent in entry-level rivals, enabling Tesla to omit certain features while still being competitive, assuming the price point is right. Nevertheless, if the leaks hold true, this Model Y is significantly stripped down, and the lack of features may raise concerns for some purchasers.
