The Daily Show Reacts to Trump’s Stressful Press Conference with the South African President

Donald Trump’s press briefings with international leaders are frequently erratic, and his latest encounter with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on Wednesday proved to be no exception. At the meeting, Trump unexpectedly raised the contentious and thoroughly discredited assertion of a “white genocide” taking place in South Africa, leaving Ramaphosa taken aback.

“The reason Trump transformed this White House gathering into what resembled a true crime podcast is that he truly believes a ‘white genocide’ is occurring in South Africa,” laughed Daily Show correspondent Ronny Chieng in a segment discussing the situation. “Which, of course, indicates that there’s absolutely not a white genocide taking place in South Africa.”

Chieng added, “You know Trump considers it serious because he employed the term ‘white genocide.’ It’s akin to someone telling him, ‘It’s not merely a genocide — it’s a white genocide! You know, the kind that should concern you!’ And Trump responded, ‘Oh no, bring him in here!’”

In spite of the uncomfortable moment, President Ramaphosa arrived with a gift for Trump — a book about golf. However, Chieng was not hopeful that the present would mitigate the tensions. “You lost Trump at ‘book,’” he joked.
