The ‘iPhone 17 Air’ has yet to be released, but Samsung is in the process of creating a competitor.

The competition for the sleekest flagship smartphone appears to be intensifying.

In late October, **[ET News](https://www.etnews.com/20241031000259)**, a publication from Korea, mentioned that Samsung is working on a slender smartphone, anticipated to be released “a few months” following the Galaxy S25 series, which is expected to launch in the first quarter of 2025.

It now seems that this information was on point. **[Smartprix](https://www.smartprix.com/bytes/samsungs-mysterious-galaxy-s25-slim-smartphone-officially-spotted-for-first-time/)** (via **[MacRumors](https://www.macrumors.com/2024/11/07/samsung-ultra-thin-galaxy-s25-iphone-17-air-rival/)**) has discovered an intriguing new Galaxy S25 model, filed in the GSMA IMEI database under the model number SM-S937U. Although the listing does not specifically identify it as a “slim” version, it is quite plausible that this represents a new entry in the Galaxy lineup, created in tandem with the standard Galaxy S25 devices.

What could be the reason for Samsung’s endeavor to develop a sleeker iteration of its flagship phone? Speculations hint that Apple is set to unveil a **[super-slim and light iPhone](https://mashable.com/article/iphone-17-rumors-leaks-specs)**, which might be named the iPhone Air or iPhone 17 Air. This forthcoming iPhone could take the place of the iPhone Plus, boasting a display size between 6.5 to 6.6 inches and a noticeably more slender build compared to current iPhone models.

As for Samsung’s “slim” smartphone, detailed information remains limited. However, we can make some comparisons with the Galaxy Alpha, a 2014 device that stood out for its thinner profile relative to other Galaxy phones of that era. The Galaxy Alpha featured a sleek chassis supported by a metallic frame and a smaller 4.7-inch display, although it wasn’t exactly a commercial success. Samsung subsequently integrated some design aspects of the Alpha into the Galaxy S6, which also showcased a thin design and metallic frame.

One thing is certain: both Samsung and Apple have remained loyal to established designs for their flagship devices in recent years. The possible rollout of ultra-slim smartphones could be just the disruption the industry requires.
