The finale of The Last of Us Season 2 concluded with a thrilling yet somewhat enigmatic ending, leaving the audience grappling with a cliffhanger imbued with demise, evolving loyalties, and lingering uncertainties. Within the turmoil — highlighted by a concluding gunshot and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) increasingly resembling Joel (Pedro Pascal) — numerous story arcs remain pending.
One of the most significant enigmas involves Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) and her faction, who seem to have vanished from the Washington Liberation Front (WLF). Their disappearance prompts questions: What are they scheming? And what precisely is their agenda when Ellie unexpectedly appears?
What Did Ellie Hear?
In Episode 7, WLF chief Isaac (Jeffrey Wright) voices his worries regarding Abby’s vanishing during a dialogue with commanding officer Elise Park (Hettienne Park). Isaac, who had been preparing Abby for a leadership position, appears noticeably concerned about her abrupt absence.
Following a clue from Nora’s (Tati Gabrielle) final words, Ellie tracks Abby’s group to a deserted aquarium. As she infiltrates, she eavesdrops on a fraught discussion between Mel (Ariela Barer) and Owen (Spencer Lord). Here’s what they communicate:
Mel: “…for her, so please don’t portray me as some sort of unfeeling monster. I’m not. And let’s be truthful, this isn’t about them, Owen. You’re talking about being behind enemy lines alone at night. This is a death wish under normal conditions, and you want to do this now? Do you even grasp what’s happening?”
Owen: “I grasp everything, but I lack a choice, don’t I? It’s Abby.”
Mel: “You absolutely have a choice. And so do I. And I am opting for no, also because it’s Abby.”
Owen: “Fine, I’ll handle it myself, as always. I can get there and back in 30. If you’re still here, you can join us and continue going. If not, you’re out.”
Mel: “Screw you, Owen.”
While vague, this exchange provides the clearest indication yet regarding Abby’s objectives.
What Could Abby Be Planning?
Since Isaac is oblivious to Abby’s location, two primary theories arise: either Abby and her faction are scheming to betray the WLF, or they’re planning to completely separate from the group.
Mel’s mention of being “behind enemy lines” is especially revealing. It likely pertains to the Seraphites, a competing faction with which the WLF is currently engaged in a conflict. If Mel still considers them adversaries, it’s improbable that Abby has shifted allegiance to their side.
Rather, Abby might be intending to abandon the WLF and Seattle entirely, perhaps in search of a fresh start away from the turmoil and strife. Her motivations remain ambiguous, but her behaviors imply a yearning to break free from the cycle of vengeance and violence.
We will have to wait for Season 3 to uncover Abby’s next steps — and how Ellie is involved in it all.
New episodes of The Last of Us Season 2 premiere Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and HBO Max.
