Out of the blue, a new Nintendo console is set to debut this year, in a way. On July 23, Lego unveiled a brand new building set resembling the classic 1989 Game Boy. With a price tag of $59.99, it costs $20 less than the primary launch game for the Switch 2.
You can now preorder the Lego Game Boy set on Amazon, Best Buy, and Walmart ahead of its official fall release. Initially available at the Lego Store, preorders quickly sold out early Thursday morning, according to @Wario64, a social media profile that tracks video game deals.
The set is composed of 421 pieces, including components for the Game Boy’s control pad, buttons, and volume and contrast knobs. Lego also offers interchangeable Game Paks for The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening and Super Mario Land. Additionally, you can change the Lego Game Boy’s screen to display its start screen or a 2D image from one of these game cartridges.
“Created for individuals who appreciate hands-on creative pursuits, this is part of a broad range of Lego sets aimed at adult builders, and with step-by-step instructions, newcomers to Lego can also take on the challenge,” stated Lego and Nintendo in a joint press statement.
First teased on Instagram back in January, the brick-style Game Boy is another enhancement to Lego’s Super Mario collection in partnership with Nintendo, which began in 2020 with a 2,646-piece building set for the Nintendo NES. (While Lego has since retired that set, Amazon continues to sell it at a premium.) Recent additions to the series feature a trio of Mario Kart Lego sets that launch turtle shells, leading Mashable’s Timothy Beck Worth to ponder, “Where were these when I was younger?”
The Lego Game Boy is scheduled for release on Wednesday, October 1, making it an excellent choice for holiday gifts.
