Recently, love triangles have emerged as a trending motif in films, showcased in the poignant Past Lives, the sultry Challengers, and the clever Materialists—all crafted by the talented married duo, screenwriters Celine Song and Justin Kuritzkes.
For viewers in search of a blend of charm and heat, The Threesome is an essential watch. Directed by Chad Hartigan and penned by Ethan Ogilby, this comedy kicks off with a threeway encounter and progresses into a funny and touching narrative about love, camaraderie, and the intricacies of growing up.
Zoey Deutch from Set It Up and Jonah Hauer-King from The Little Mermaid portray Olivia and Connor, friends navigating a will-they-won’t-they scenario. Their relationship shifts when they meet the alluring Jenny (Ruby Cruz), culminating in an evening of casual group intimacy. Complications ensue when both women find themselves expecting, turning their private encounter into a public affair.
After viewing The Threesome during its SXSW World Premiere, I was enthralled. The film examines the turmoil of contemporary relationships with compassion, steering clear of making its passionate protagonists appear foolish. It’s a delightful and playful comedy featuring great chemistry among its main cast and a robust supporting ensemble, including Jaboukie Young-White, Josh Segarra, Robert Longstreet, Arden Myrin, Kristin Slaysman, Allan McLeod, and Julia Sweeney.
The Threesome will be released in theaters on Sept. 5.
