A historical exhibit authorized by President Donald Trump’s administration showcases AI-generated videos of the founding fathers and other key figures from revolutionary history. The “Road to Liberty” exhibition at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building in Washington, D.C. features various AI videos designed to animate “America’s founding through cinematic storytelling.” However, it is somewhat atypical and at times inaccurate.
Gizmodo covered the exhibit, emphasizing that the PragerU-produced “Founders Museum” offers a “somewhat skewed perspective of America’s founding.” PragerU, a conservative nonprofit recognized for its educational material, has drawn criticism from liberals for framing rightwing content as exclusively educational. An AI-generated John Adams, for instance, remarks that “facts do not care about our feelings,” a phrase tied to rightwing figure Ben Shapiro, which John Adams never actually uttered. This appears to be a calculated strategy by PragerU.
A video from Gizmodo’s Matt Novak features the AI founding father introducing himself.
On the Road to Liberty website, users can view 59 AI-generated videos showcasing historical figures. The White House notified NPR that the goal was to utilize AI to make “these individuals, locations, and events come to life, rendering history appealing to Americans nationwide.” Nonetheless, experts voiced concerns regarding the representation of the founding fathers.
William G. Thomas, vice president of the research division at the American Historical Association, remarked to NPR, “While the initiative to highlight the founders and the signers of the Declaration of Independence is one that many historians appreciate and would endorse, I think there are some concerns regarding how that is executed in this instance.”
The AI founding fathers come across as somewhat unusual, at least to this reporter. As Gizmodo pointed out, the John Adams video displays the odd AI propensity for creating figures with extra or absent fingers, a feature common in AI-generated content online, but surprising in a White House-endorsed exhibit detailing the nation’s history.
