There exists a Kindle Scribe in color, but the price may not be to your liking.

Amazon is broadening its Colorsoft lineup with a brand new e-reader. The Kindle Scribe, the sole Kindle e-reader equipped with writing features, is now transitioning to a color display. The Kindle Scribe Colorsoft was unveiled at Amazon’s Devices & Services event on Tuesday, September 30 in New York City. The eagerness to experience the device is considerable, yet the cost is unexpected.

The Kindle Scribe Colorsoft arrives after the introduction of the Colorsoft Signature Edition, Colorsoft, and Colorsoft Essentials Kids, marking it as the fourth in the collection, but the first to include writing functionalities. It will boast a sleek design, measuring just 5.4mm thick with a precisely engineered aluminum frame.

It will come with a revamped, more functional home screen, keeping all the advantages of a Kindle e-reader while emphasizing drawing and writing features. Users can transfer files to the Kindle Scribe through Microsoft OneDrive or Google Drive, and a new Kindle Workspace tool will assist with PDFs, files, notes, and textbooks.

However, the price of the Scribe Colorsoft has sparked conversation. Speculation indicated it could exceed $500, but Amazon stunned everyone with a price of $629.99, making it the priciest Kindle to date. Other color e-readers with note-taking features are significantly cheaper. The Kobo Libra Colour, featuring a smaller display but comparable capabilities, is priced at $229.99, which is $400 less than the Scribe. It even costs more than an iPad, which starts at $349. Even with an Apple Pencil added for $129, the total would be $151.99 less than the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft.

Despite its steep price, the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft may still provide significant value — only time will reveal its true worth once it’s put to the test.
