TikTok Discovers Joy on the Dancefloor with Jon Hamm

If you’ve spotted Jon Hamm reveling on a blue-tinted dancefloor on your FYP, you are not the only one.

The latest TikTok craze showcases creators stitching together a segment from the actor’s performance in the Apple TV series Your Friends and Neighbors, which debuted in April of this year.

Creators employ the stitch to illustrate the sudden pleasure of certain delightful instances, like “when you’re petting a dog and someone comments ‘wow he usually doesn’t like anyone!'” or when someone proposes “hey let’s watch Lord of the Rings, I’ve never seen it,” or the unique “hey can I be mean for a second?” The stitch has also transformed into reactions of cats being happily petted, with Hamm’s laid-back demeanor mirroring that of a pleased feline.

All of this is set to Danish DJ Kato’s 2010 song “Turn The Lights Off” featuring Jon, crafting a distinctive online concoction of joy — and contributing to TikTok’s influence on reintroducing older music tracks.

The edited clip from Your Friends and Neighbors Season 1, episode 8, named “When Did We Become These People?” doesn’t quite depict euphoria, but instead a moment of pure escape for Hamm’s character, Andrew Cooper, a disgraced financier who begins pilfering from his neighbors. In the scene, Coop is at a nadir and counters it with a night out, ultimately getting lost in a trance on the dancefloor to Joseph William Morgan’s “Sentient System” (the TikTok memes do not use this song).

In the end, this TikTok trend isn’t particularly profound; it’s simply about the vibes. Much like those cockatiels from some time ago.
