TikTok Introduces Footnotes: An Innovative Fact-Checking Feature with Community Insights

Community Notes have emerged as the newest phenomenon on social media platforms. X has implemented them, Meta has incorporated them, and now TikTok is getting involved. TikTok has recently revealed the debut of Footnotes, its adaptation of Community Notes, which is currently accessible in the U.S. for users in the testing program. Approximately 80,000 users are taking part, all of whom must have an active TikTok account for a minimum of six months, reside in the U.S., have no violations of community guidelines over the past six months, and be at least 18 years of age. Those interested can sign up online to participate in the program.

Footnotes will soon be visible on videos for the U.S. community, who will also have the option to rate them, according to TikTok’s press release. At first, it might take a while for a footnote to go public as contributors adapt to the feature. As more footnotes are created and assessed, the system will grow more intelligent and efficient. TikTok’s ranking mechanisms will evolve and enhance over time, shortening the time it takes for a footnote to be written and become visible.

Footnotes will undergo moderation through a mix of automated processes and human oversight, and users can report any footnotes they deem inaccurate or against TikTok’s guidelines. TikTok emphasized that Footnotes bolster their commitment to maintaining platform integrity with content labels, search banners, and a global fact-checking initiative to assist users in evaluating content reliability and finding reliable sources.

The rollout of Footnotes coincides with the launch of additional features, such as Discover & Learn, Family Pairing, a wellness initiative, and new resources for creators.
