TikTok Seeks to Assist You in Recognizing and Excluding AI Content

Social media users are becoming more discontent with AI-generated material on their preferred platforms, resulting in a rising backlash against such material, often referred to as “AI slop.” Major platforms have responded to this sentiment. For example, Pinterest recently rolled out a feature that allows users to fully filter out AI content if they choose.

TikTok has now revealed plans to introduce tools that assist users in identifying AI-generated content and diminishing its visibility if they so desire. The company is currently testing a new content control within the “Manage topics” feature, which permits users to modify the quantity of AI-generated content they encounter.

The “Manage topics” feature already allows users to affect the type of content they see in their For You feeds based on categories such as “Current Affairs,” “Health & Fitness,” or “Fashion & Beauty.” The AI-generated content control is distinctive as it spans all topic categories and zeroes in on the method of content creation.

TikTok stresses that it does not oppose AI, asserting that AI can boost creativity, discovery, and safety on the platform when utilized transparently and responsibly. The company invests in AI-enhanced experiences that benefit its community but highlights the significance of transparency.

To bolster this transparency, TikTok is evaluating an “invisible watermarking” solution to enhance its AI label policies, adding an additional layer of protection to its transparency measures regarding AI-generated content. Furthermore, TikTok is launching a $2 million AI literacy fund and joining the non-profit Partnership on AI, which is dedicated to ethical AI practices.

TikTok’s announcement concerning AI content controls could encourage other social media platforms to provide similar filtering options for their users. The current question is not whether they will follow suit, but which platform will be next.
