Today’s Lunar Phase: January 3 Moon Look

This evening signifies the Full Moon, marking the fourth consecutive supermoon. Each Full Moon possesses a distinct name, with January’s referred to as the ‘Wolf Moon’.

What is the moon phase today?

On Saturday, Jan. 3, the moon phase is Full Moon. According to The Sky Live, the moon will be 100% lit tonight.

When will the next full moon occur?

The subsequent full moon is on Feb. 1.

What do moon phases entail?

According to NASA, the Moon takes approximately 29.5 days to complete its cycle, known as the lunar cycle. During this span, the Moon experiences various phases as it revolves around Earth. Even though the same face of the Moon perpetually presents to Earth, the sunlight reflecting off its surface changes. This leads the Moon to appear fully lit, partially lit, or completely obscured at different moments. The lunar cycle encompasses eight primary phases:

New Moon – The moon is located between Earth and the sun, rendering the side towards us dark (invisible).

Waxing Crescent – A small portion of light can be seen on the right side (Northern Hemisphere).

First Quarter – The right side of the moon is lit up, resembling a half-moon.

Waxing Gibbous – Over half is illuminated, but not completely full.

Full Moon – The moon’s surface is entirely illuminated and visible.

Waning Gibbous – The moon begins to lose light on the right side (Northern Hemisphere).

Third Quarter (or Last Quarter) – Another half-moon, with the left side lit.

Waning Crescent – A slender sliver of light persists on the left side before it becomes dark again.
