What’s the origin of Wordle?

Wordle was initially designed by engineer Josh Wardle as a gift for his significant other. It rapidly became a worldwide phenomenon, with thousands participating each day. Devotees even devised their own versions, including the battle royale-inspired Squabble, the music guessing game Heardle, and multi-word challenges such as Dordle and Quordle.

The widespread acclaim of Wordle ultimately resulted in its acquisition by The New York Times. It has also gained traction on TikTok, where users share live gameplay.

What starting word should I use in Wordle?

The ideal starting word is the one you feel most comfortable with! But if you’re aiming for a more tactical approach, we have a few recommendations. A solid starting word typically contains at least two distinct vowels and frequently used consonants like S, T, R, or N. Want more suggestions? Check out our guide to the best starting words for Wordle.

What happened to the Wordle archive?

There used to be an open-access archive for past Wordle puzzles, but it was removed at the request of The New York Times. Nevertheless, NYT Games subscribers can now access an official Wordle archive via their platform.

Is Wordle becoming more difficult?

Although some days may seem tougher, Wordle isn’t any harder now than it was at its initial launch. If you’re seeking an added challenge, you can always enable Hard Mode in the game settings.
