Disney Reveals First Trailer for Tron: Ares — And It’s Entering the Real World
Disney has officially unveiled the first trailer for Tron: Ares, and it’s evident this isn’t the Grid you recall. The forthcoming film propels the franchise in an audacious new direction, intertwining the digital and physical realms in a manner fans haven’t witnessed before.
In a significant departure from prior entries, the trailer showcases rogue programs breaking free from the limits of the virtual domain and stepping into the real world. Light cycles race through urban streets, skillfully cutting through police vehicles with their signature light trails. A particularly striking scene features a colossal, red-lit structure descending from above — a clear indication that the divide between the digital and physical realms is waning.
Although it has been 15 years since the launch of Tron: Legacy, Tron: Ares continues the narrative as a standalone sequel. The franchise originally commenced with the revolutionary 1982 film Tron, and this third installment continues to broaden the universe. Jared Leto takes on the role of Ares, an AI program on an enigmatic mission. Whether Ares is a protagonist or a menace remains ambiguous, but his luminous red circuitry — typically linked to system enforcers — suggests a multifaceted role. Notably, Ares seems to be turning rogue himself.
The film boasts a star-studded ensemble, featuring Evan Peters as Julian Dillinger (a name that will resonate with long-time fans), Greta Lee as Eve Kim, Jodie Turner-Smith, Cameron Monaghan, Sarah Desjardins, Hasan Minhaj, Arturo Castro, Gillian Anderson, and Jeff Bridges reprising his legendary role as Kevin Flynn. While Flynn doesn’t appear on screen in the trailer, his voice concludes it with a haunting line: “Ready? ’Cause there’s no going back.”
Though Daft Punk won’t be returning to score the film (a letdown for numerous fans), the soundtrack is in proficient hands with Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor overseeing it — and judging by the trailer, the music is already leaving a robust impression.
Tron: Ares hits theaters on October 10.
