Crafted and helmed by James Sweeney, Twinless stars Dylan O’Brien as Roman, a man grieving the loss of his identical twin, Rocky (also portrayed by O’Brien). He joins a support group for those dealing with twin losses, where he encounters Dennis (Sweeney). Dennis brings back memories of Roman’s deceased twin, who was queer and charismatic like Dennis, whereas Roman is comparatively introspective and straight. The two swiftly forge a deep friendship, united by their shared sorrow.

The initial segment of the Twinless trailer emphasizes the camaraderie between Roman and Dennis, depicting them hanging out, running errands, and grieving their missing halves. It seems they may be heading towards a codependent relationship, but the trailer unexpectedly shifts tone, subverting the anticipations of a quirky 2025 bromantic comedy (see: Friendship).

The film’s unexpected developments have garnered acclaim from critics at Sundance. The Hollywood Reporter‘s Lovia Gyarkye remarked that, “If the meme ‘Never let them know your next move’ were a film, it would be this one,” while IndieWire’s David Ehrlich noted, “[The] narrative makes a clever and skillfully executed detour from Apatow to Almodóvar or De Palma.”

Twinless also earned two accolades at its world premiere in Sundance — the Audience Award: U.S. Dramatic, and a U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Acting for O’Brien’s portrayal.

Twinless premieres in theaters on Sept. 5.
