Twitch Set to Introduce Vertical Streaming and More Updates

Twitch has announced major updates at its European conference. One important enhancement is dual-format streaming and vertical viewing, improving the mobile experience for viewers. Streamers now have the ability to utilize both horizontal and vertical formats at the same time, tailored for any phone orientation.

“The newly introduced vertical layout permits viewers to take part in events such as Hype Trains and support streamers by subscribing, gifting, and cheering while enjoying a full-screen experience,” Twitch noted in a blog post following the TwitchCon Rotterdam keynote. “Viewers can also personalize their chat settings to manage how much content they see on their screens.”

Twitch will initially test dual-format and vertical streaming with select channels this summer, with plans for wider rollout later this year. Furthermore, it will experiment with 2K (1440p) streaming on a limited number of channels.

To assist creators, Twitch is launching features like Combos, a monetization tool currently in beta, and promotions for gifted subscriptions led by streamers. It is also developing a tool to recommend Clips for streamers’ highlights, a Clip Leaderboard, and capabilities for reacting to Clips.

Twitch is currently lagging behind TikTok and YouTube in terms of live streaming hours and is striving to increase viewer engagement with these new features. The next few months will determine whether these updates enable Twitch to reclaim its position.
