Valve Reveals Upcoming Steam Console, VR Headset, and Controller, Set to Launch in 2026

Valve has revealed three fresh hardware offerings for Steam: the console-like Steam Machine, a virtual reality headset called Steam Frame, and an upgraded version of the Steam Controller. All products run on SteamOS and are anticipated to debut in early 2026, though pricing information has yet to be revealed.

The Steam Machine, as stated by Valve, features six times the power of the Steam Deck and can access the full Steam library, which includes both AAA and indie titles. Games that run well on the console will earn a “Steam Machine Verified” badge, similar to the “Steam Deck Verified” badge. It exists at the intersection of a console and a PC. Valve mentions, “Once you log in with your Steam account, your entire library will be there waiting for you.”

In terms of dimensions, the Steam Machine is a 6-inch cube designed to fit beneath a TV or on a desktop, equipped with an LED strip to indicate system status, such as download progress.

The Steam Frame is Valve’s latest wireless virtual reality headset, crafted with a “streaming” focus and comes with controllers. As per Valve’s website, it offers “wireless, comfortable, lightweight VR for your Steam library.” It accommodates both VR and non-VR games and will feature its own “Steam Frame Verified” label to denote compatible titles.

A novel functionality named Foveated Streaming enhances detail where the user’s gaze is directed. This capability utilizes low-latency eye tracking to align high-resolution pixels with the user’s focus, enhancing image quality.

The revised Steam Controller has undergone significant redesign compared to its 2015 predecessor. It features standard A, B, X, and Y buttons, thumbsticks, and a directional pad, along with two large trackpads near the handles that simulate mouse movement.

The thumbsticks utilize TMR technology for enhanced responsiveness and longevity. The controller also integrates haptic feedback for a more engaging experience and a grip-enabled gyro known as Grip Sense, which allows users to engage gyro aiming by holding and releasing.

Moreover, the Steam Controller is accompanied by the Steam Controller Puck, a wireless transmitter that acts as both a charging dock and a stable link to the hardware.

In the meantime, the Steam Deck and Steam Deck OLED continue their successful run for Valve, and the handheld will be compatible with the new hardware.
