Verizon Service Disruption: Reasons Your Device Shows SOS and Latest Updates

Users’ reports have pointed out a major problem at Verizon, with numerous individuals observing clear widespread service interruptions.

Reports began to rise on Downdetector around noon Eastern time on Wednesday. (Note: Downdetector is owned by Ziff Davis, the same parent organization as Mashable.)

“Verizon is currently facing a major service disruption with a total of 235,373 reports logged in the past 24 hours,” according to Downdetector.

Verizon’s support account on X recognized the issues and discussed measures being taken to fix the problem.

“We are aware of a problem affecting wireless voice and data services for some users,” the account stated. “Our engineers are on the case and are working to pinpoint and resolve the issue swiftly. We recognize how crucial dependable connectivity is and apologize for the trouble.”

A number of users on social media mentioned their devices were displaying SOS mode.

What does SOS signify on your phone?

In short, seeing SOS on your device means there is no connection to a cellular network. “If you see SOS or ‘SOS only’ in the status bar, your device isn’t connected to your cellular network, but you can still make emergency calls through other carrier networks,” states an Apple support page regarding this feature.

Are T-Mobile and AT&T experiencing problems as well?

At the same time as the surge at Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T also saw increases in reports on Downdetector. However, this does not necessarily indicate they were encountering the same issue as Verizon. Downdetector monitors user-reported problems, which may be inaccurate or related to different issues.
