Video Shows Xpeng Presenting Its Spooky New Robot Live: Watch as It Navigates the Uncanny Valley.

Xpeng, a Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, has captivated social media with its latest humanoid robot, Iron. The robot appeared so lifelike that Xpeng performed a live dissection on stage to confirm it wasn’t a human in disguise.

Mashable reporter Amanda Yeo was present at the AI Day event in Guangzhou, where Iron made its debut, and more coverage from the event will follow. Clips of Iron are already going viral on social media platforms in the U.S. and China.

You can view the full press conference, showcasing Iron’s electronic parts, on Xpeng’s YouTube channel.

Iron leaves a memorable impression on stage, in part because Xpeng has given it prominent breasts. Its slow and clumsy movements are reminiscent of Scarlett Johansson in the 2013 sci-fi film Under the Skin. Comparisons to Ex Machina and Westworld are also fitting, as well as recalling the iconic moment in Terminator 2 when Arnold Schwarzenegger reveals his robotic arm.

Science fiction continues to shape the development and perception of robotics. Although humans are not the most efficient model for robots, engineers continue to create humanoid robots, highlighting our propensity to craft in our own likeness.

In 2014, Popular Science characterized humanoid robots as a clumsy mess, a sentiment that still holds true today as they struggle with tasks such as walking or folding laundry.

Iron is not the first humanoid robot to capture public attention. This year, Tesla’s Optimus, Boston Dynamics’ Atlas, and X1’s NEO domestic helper bot have also made headlines.

Anthropomorphized robots intrigue us, and researchers are investigating how humans react to them. It may be the uncanny valley effect, a preview of the future, or an unknown neurological response.

Regardless of the cause, robots like Iron captivate and disturb us, making them a guaranteed way for companies like Xpeng to grab headlines.

We can’t take our eyes off them.
