Videos Display Tesla Robotaxis Purportedly Breaking Traffic Regulations in Austin

Tesla’s robotaxi rollout in Austin, Texas, appears to be encountering challenges, in addition to the safety issues highlighted by city officials weeks back. The eagerly awaited robotaxi service commenced over the weekend in Austin, restricted to a limited number of riders, at a set fare of $4.20. Shortly after the launch, clips surfaced online depicting the autonomous vehicles engaging in dubious driving behaviors.

In one clip, a robotaxi briefly travels on the incorrect side of the road toward oncoming cars and subsequently seems to drive over a curb at its destination. Another YouTube video illustrates a robotaxi abruptly braking for parked police cars, while a different video showcases a robotaxi considerably exceeding the speed limit.

Although Mashable cannot authenticate these videos’ legitimacy, they have attracted the attention of federal transportation regulators. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reached out to Tesla regarding the footage indicating possible traffic law breaches, as initially reported by Bloomberg.

“NHTSA is cognizant of the incidents in question and is liaising with the manufacturer to collect further details,” stated NHTSA, via TechCrunch. “NHTSA will persist in enforcing the law across all vehicle manufacturers and equipment, following the Vehicle Safety Act and our data-informed, risk-oriented investigative approach. According to U.S. law, NHTSA does not pre-approve new technologies or vehicle systems — instead, manufacturers attest that each vehicle complies with NHTSA’s stringent safety criteria, and the agency probes incidents related to possible safety flaws.”

NHTSA also indicated it would assess the reports of any occurrences and take necessary measures. While robotaxis have been introduced in Austin, it might be prudent to observe how the situation unfolds.
