Walmart Expands Drone Delivery Service to Five Key Cities

Walmart’s initiatives to use drones for order deliveries are progressing, as the retailer broadens its drone delivery program to five major cities and more than 100 store locations. Consumers in Atlanta, Charlotte, Houston, Orlando, and Tampa can anticipate air deliveries in 30 minutes or less, managed by Wing. This expansion encompasses Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and Texas, building on existing operations in Texas in collaboration with Zipline. Since its launch in 2021, the program has seen drones complete over 150,000 deliveries.

Drones are capable of delivering to residences within a six-mile radius of a participating store, handling orders weighing between 2.4 to 10 pounds, based on the fleet. Customers are informed when the drones are on their way, and packages are lowered to the ground through a cable system. Greg Cathey, Walmart’s senior vice president of U.S. Transformation and Innovation, remarked that drone delivery is integral to Walmart’s pledge to transform retail.

Drone delivery services will be available to qualified Walmart customers once launched. Users will find a link to the drone landing page on the Walmart homepage after logging in or can register to be alerted when the program becomes available to them.
