**Karla Sofía Gascón Gives Inspiring Speech at the 82nd Golden Globes**
Karla Sofía Gascón, renowned for her role in *Emilia Pérez*, delivered a brief but powerful address at the 82nd Golden Globes on Sunday, advocating for the freedom of identity and strength in the face of discrimination and adversity.
The Spanish-born actress achieved a historic milestone as the first transgender woman nominated for Best Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical/Comedy, owing to her portrayal in the leading role. This achievement follows Michaela Jaé Rodriguez’s historic victory in 2002, when she became the first trans performer to win a Golden Globe, claiming Best Actress in a Television Series – Drama for *Pose*.
Despite Gascón not winning in her category—Demi Moore took home the award for her role in *The Substance*—she still enjoyed a significant moment. When *Emilia Pérez* was declared the winner of Best Picture (Musical/Comedy), director Jacques Audiard passed the microphone to Gascón, allowing her the chance to speak to the audience.
Gascón enchanted the gathering, highlighting her eye-catching bright orange Saint Laurent gown created by Anthony Vaccarello. “Tonight, I chose this color, the Buddhist color, because I have a message for you: light always prevails over darkness,” she proclaimed.
“You may confine us, you may harm us, but you can never strip us of our soul, our existence, our identity,” Gascón asserted. “I urge you to raise your voice, embrace your freedom, and declare, ‘I am who I am, not who you wish me to be.'”
*Emilia Pérez* excelled in the film categories with 10 nominations, ultimately securing both Best Picture (Musical/Comedy) and Best Picture (Non-English Language). Zoe Saldaña won Best Supporting Female Actor (Motion Picture), narrowly beating her co-star Selena Gomez, who was also nominated. Additionally, the film won Best Original Song (Motion Picture) for “El Mal.”
