The launch of Tesla’s Robotaxi has ignited a competitive landscape: Waymo is poised to roll out its self-driving ride-hailing service in Dallas next year.
On Monday, Waymo revealed that the service will be accessible via its app, with Avis overseeing the fleet’s management and upkeep.
Dallas records the highest rate of traffic fatalities among the 10 largest cities in the U.S., and Waymo aims to address this issue.
The company has not revealed how many vehicles will operate in Dallas or released a coverage map. Nonetheless, the press release highlighted several parts of the city that are likely to be included: “Whether catching a Mavericks’ game, exploring the arts districts, or enjoying the culinary scene, the Waymo Driver offers a convenient, consistent way for both residents and visitors to get around town.”
No specific launch date has been provided. Waymo mentions that “early testing is already underway,” with public rides anticipated “next year.” The company intends to expand to additional cities in the future.
Waymo is currently active in San Francisco, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Austin, while Miami and Washington D.C. are marked as “coming soon.”
This announcement follows Elon Musk’s remarks that Tesla’s Robotaxis could potentially serve half of the U.S. population by the close of 2025, subject to regulatory approval. Waymo, operational for a decade, has been in competition with Tesla; after Tesla broadened its Robotaxi service area in Austin, Waymo countered with its own significant expansion.
