Wednesday Season 2, Part 1: Revealing Ophelia

“Wednesday” Season 2, Part 1 explores the Addams Family in greater depth, introducing characters such as Uncle Fester (Fred Armisen) and Grandmama Hester Frump (Joanna Lumley). However, it frequently alludes to a significant family member who remains unseen: Ophelia Frump.

Ophelia is Morticia’s younger sibling, making appearances in various adaptations of the Addams Family, including “The Addams Family” series (Carolyn Jones), “The Addams Family” movie (Allegra Kent), “Addams Family Values” (Laura Esterman), and “The New Addams Family” (Lisa Calder). Usually portrayed as upbeat, her representation in “Wednesday” hints at a different character should she be introduced.

In “Wednesday,” Ophelia’s narrative is a sorrowful one, affecting Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones). Like Morticia and Wednesday (Jenna Ortega), Ophelia possesses psychic abilities. Her excessive use of these powers at Nevermore led to her developing black tears, prompting Hester to institutionalize her at Willow Hill Psychiatric Hospital. Morticia was against this, worried it would exacerbate Ophelia’s issues.

This family backstory puts a strain on the relationship between Morticia and Hester and amplifies Morticia’s worries regarding Wednesday’s engagement with Goody’s spellbook and her psychic capabilities. Morticia strives to be a more supportive mother than Hester was to Ophelia.

Ophelia’s tale doesn’t conclude with her being committed. Uncle Fester shares with Wednesday that Morticia had previously asked him to check on Ophelia at Willow Hill, only to discover she was vanished. By Season 2, two decades have passed since her disappearance.

Or has she?

In episode 4, Wednesday and Fester discover a project at Willow Hill named LOIS (Long-term Outcast Integration Study), which extracts Outcast abilities for Normies. This program has fabricated the deaths of its participants, potentially including Ophelia.

I suspect Ophelia was included in LOIS due to her psychic skills, confined for 20 years. When Wednesday and Fester encounter the LOIS subjects, one woman (Frances O’Connor) is remarkable, lacking Outcast powers and remaining close to Wednesday. Her presence coincides with Morticia’s description, indicating she might be Ophelia.

It would be appropriate for Wednesday, who shares similar psychic experiences, to liberate her aunt from Willow Hill.

“Wednesday” Season 2, Part 1 is available for streaming on Netflix, with Part 2 set to premiere on Sept. 3.
