WhatsApp’s Latest Update Prevents Exports and AI Utilization in Conversations

WhatsApp Unveils New “Enhanced Chat Privacy” Feature

WhatsApp has introduced an updated privacy feature known as “Enhanced Chat Privacy,” which adds an additional layer of security to its already robust messaging service.

The Meta-owned messaging platform has consistently provided end-to-end encryption—a standard privacy measure also present in applications like Signal and Facebook Messenger—ensuring that messages are exclusively viewable by the sender and the intended recipient. Additionally, WhatsApp has previously rolled out features such as disappearing messages and chat locks. Now, it’s elevating privacy to another level.

The newly introduced “Enhanced Chat Privacy” feature is accessible for both one-on-one and group conversations. It restricts users from exporting chat histories, automatically obtaining media files, or utilizing messages in AI-driven functionalities. This update aims to enhance user control over the sharing and storage of conversations.

In a blog entry, WhatsApp shared the reasoning behind this feature: “WhatsApp groups are increasingly becoming an extension of our real-life networks, some of which are significantly closer than others. We believe this feature is most valuable in discussions with groups where you may not know every individual intimately but where the topics are sensitive in nature—such as talking about health topics in a support group or mobilizing your community for a significant issue.”

How to Activate Enhanced Chat Privacy

To turn on the feature:

1. Ensure your WhatsApp application is updated to the most recent version.
2. Open the conversation you wish to protect.
3. Tap the chat name at the top.
4. Select “Enhanced Chat Privacy” from the list.

While this recent feature adds an additional shield of security, it’s important to remember that no privacy solution is entirely infallible—particularly if you willingly disclose sensitive information to inappropriate individuals.
