This Valentine’s Day, experience Emerald Fennell’s sultry interpretation of Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights.
In her third feature, the Academy Award–winning writer-director of Saltburn and Promising Young Woman teams up with Hollywood talents Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi. They portray Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, the fervent couple at the heart of Brontë’s timeless tale. The film’s teaser trailer hints that Fennell is poised to heighten the intensity, possibly exceeding the onscreen ardor that left Saltburn audiences astounded.
The teaser presents an array of provocative visuals: Cathy gazes at a bare-chested Heathcliff while she trails her fingers across his lips. Heathcliff rips Cathy’s dress and asserts, “I can follow you like a dog to the end of the world.” There’s also an abundance of dough kneading and runny egg yolk fondling, reminiscent of a chef’s TikTok. Initial test screening attendees characterized the film as “aggressively provocative,” according to World of Reel. Bring it on.
A sinister undertone accompanies this fervor, with slogans “Drive Me Mad” and “Come Undone” foreshadowing the approaching tragedy.
The teaser features Charli XCX and Caroline Polachek’s “Everything is romantic” remix from Brat and it’s completely different but also still brat. This music selection implies Charli XCX’s significant role in Wuthering Heights, as she has penned original songs for the film.
Wuthering Heights also stars Hong Chau, Shazad Latif, Alison Oliver, Martin Clunes, and Ewan Mitchell.
Wuthering Heights hits theaters on Feb. 14.
