The European Commission has recently levied a $140 million penalty against Elon Musk’s X. Additionally, Europe utilized a vulnerability in X’s advertising system to enhance the announcement regarding the penalty. In reaction, X’s head of product, Nikita Bier, remarked that X has shut down the European Commission’s advertising account.
On Friday, the official account of the European Commission tweeted on X about the penalty, marking the first under the EU’s Digital Services Act. The penalty resulted from adjustments X enacted following Musk’s takeover, which involved complications with the blue checkmark design, transparency in advertising, and data access for researchers.
Musk replied with “Bullshit” on X. Bier later declared the termination of the European Commission’s ad account, alleging that they had exploited X’s Ad Composer to deceive users and enhance post reach. The Ad Composer enables video uploads connected to external sites, elevating post visibility.
Bier asserted that the vulnerability had been resolved and had never been previously exploited. The ramifications for the European Commission remain uncertain, as their ad account had not been active since 2021, and the flaw is now addressed.
