YouTube Music is celebrating its tenth anniversary by introducing new features for its audience, including its inaugural foray into community comments.
Revealed on August 21, the streaming platform now permits users to post comments and engage with others directly on albums and playlists — extending beyond videos — and connect with friends and fellow enthusiasts via “taste matching playlists.” These playlists will refresh daily in accordance with the listening and viewing patterns of linked users.
Subscribers of YouTube Music can also obtain additional details about their beloved artists in reality, such as alerts for fresh releases, merchandise, and live shows, thanks to a collaboration with Bandsintown. Users identified as “top fans” along with artists reaching new benchmarks in music video views will be awarded unique profile badges.
If these functionalities seem reminiscent, it’s because many are already in use by Spotify users, including Blend playlists, live event calendars, and artist milestones — Spotify even incorporated a built-in merchandise hub on artists’ profiles. Other music streaming services have launched features to boost fan interaction, like Apple Music’s live performance Set Lists and collaborative playlists.
YouTube Music was originally launched in 2015 as an independent application and has since undergone rebranding and growth within the YouTube framework, featuring a Premium tier that now enables subscribers to explore generative AI capabilities and a Recap feature influenced by Spotify’s Wrapped. In February, the service announced it had achieved 100 million subscribers.
