Hinge Creator Leaves Match to Establish Overtone, an AI-Powered Dating Platform

Justin McLeod, the founder and CEO of Hinge, is resigning to launch Overtone, an AI-based dating platform. McLeod introduced Hinge in 2012 and revamped it in 2016 to assist individuals in finding romance. In a blog entry on Overtone’s website, McLeod mentions that public opinion regarding dating applications was evolving, which led him to reconstruct Hinge entirely. He observes a comparable change in cultural trends now, even with Hinge’s financial success, and believes that AI can offer a more personalized and effective method for people to connect with partners. Over the last year, McLeod and a small team at Hinge have been working on Overtone, characterized as an “AI-driven endeavor supported by Match Group.” McLeod imagines it as a service functioning like a personal matchmaker, facilitating tailored introductions. Jackie Jantos will take on the role of Hinge’s new CEO, while Tamika Young will serve as the chief marketing and communications officer. McLeod will continue to advise Hinge until March. Hinge has been integrating AI, rolling out features such as Convo Starters and AI-assisted prompt feedback. A recent report indicates that Hinge users are also utilizing AI in their dating experiences. Overtone joins other AI-based matchmaking platforms like Sitch and the AI-enabled app from Three Day Rule.
