The Unexpected Link Between The Rickroll and Wake Up Dead Man

Years back, “Rickrolling” was the pinnacle of online humor. If you’re not aware, the gag consisted of deceiving someone into clicking a link to the corny music video for Rick Astley’s ’80s classic “Never Gonna Give You Up.” You’ve fallen victim to a Rickroll.

In an interesting twist, the most recent chapter of the internet-favorite series Knives Out features a filming site in common with “Never Gonna Give You Up.” Director Rian Johnson confirmed on Bluesky that the gym scene in Wake Up Dead Man was filmed at the same location where Astley shot his iconic video. Curiously, few on the set showed any enthusiasm.

“This is accurate, and I was the sole person on set who found it thrilling (and played the song on my phone to blank expressions),” Johnson commented in reply to a post emphasizing the amusing detail.

The shared site is the Harrow Club in London, previously a church. Thus, Wake Up Dead Man and “Never Gonna Give You Up” possess some artistic lineage. What a peculiar world.
