Lego Introduces Interactive Intelligent Play System: Discover Its Functionality

At CES 2026, Lego introduced the Lego Smart Play system, an interactive technology celebrated as the most important advancement in Lego bricks since the introduction of the Minifigure nearly 50 years ago.

This innovative platform responds to players’ actions with sounds, lights, and animations, providing a responsive, screen-free play experience.

Pre-orders start on Jan. 9 in select markets for the Lego Smart Play system, featuring interactive components such as Lego Smart Tags, Lego Smart Bricks, and Lego Smart Minifigures. During a keynote event prior to CES 2026 in Las Vegas, Lego executives displayed the smart bricks, asserting that the system “animates Lego creations like never before.”

“For over 90 years, the Lego Group has fueled imagination and creativity in children worldwide. As the world changes, so do we — innovating to fulfill the play needs of every new generation. Lego Smart Play is the next thrilling chapter in our Lego System in Play and something we are incredibly excited to offer to the world at this scale,” stated Julia Goldin, Chief Product & Marketing Officer of the LEGO Group, according to a Lego press release.

Launching on March 1 with three Lego Star Wars sets, the announcement highlighted Dave Filoni, Chief Creative Officer of Lucasfilm, previewing the new kits.

What is the Lego Smart Play System?

Created by the Lego Group’s Creative Play Lab, the Lego Smart Play system generates sounds and lights in relation to player movements and builds. Lego asserts that the platform “boasts more than twenty patented world-firsts,” including a tailor-made chip smaller than a typical Lego connector stud.

Lego Smart Bricks and Minifigures align with standard Lego piece sizes and shapes but incorporate sensors such as accelerometers, light sensors, and sound sensors. They also feature a tiny speaker with an onboard synthesizer and a wireless charging mechanism.

The upcoming Lego Smart Play Star Wars Sets comprise:

Lego Star Wars Smart Play: Luke’s Red Five X-Wing building set — This 584-piece set encompasses two Smart Minifigures (Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia), a Lego Smart Brick, and five Lego Smart Tags.

Lego Star Wars Smart Play: Darth Vader’s TIE Fighter building set — This 473-piece set showcases “a brick-built Rebel Outpost and an Imperial Fueling Station, along with a SMART Minifigure featuring Darth Vader and a Rebel Fleet Trooper Minifigure.” Interactive elements include engine sounds.

Lego Star Wars Smart Play: Throne Room Duel & A-Wing building set — This 962-piece set enables players to “re-create and reinterpret one of the most iconic moments from the original Star Wars trilogy, the final lightsaber duel between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader at the conclusion of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.” It includes three Smart Minifigures (Darth Vader, Emperor Palpatine, and Jedi Luke Skywalker) and a Smart Tag-enabled cannon turret.
