Gmail Unveils AI Inbox and Summaries featuring Gemini

Google has been progressively merging its AI assistant, Gemini, into Gmail. Now, Gmail is officially “entering the Gemini era” with an inbox assistant, as proclaimed by Gmail’s VP of product, Blake Barnes, in a recent blog entry.

Gmail is rolling out AI Overviews, which encapsulate inbox data, enhancing previously launched autogenerated email summaries. AI Overview can additionally respond to inquiries about inbox content, but this capability is exclusively available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.

AI Inbox is another innovative feature aimed at “filtering out the clutter” and assisting users in concentrating on significant emails. It features personalized briefings, highlights to-dos, and identifies emails from contacts. The blog entry reassures that AI Inbox analysis “occurs securely with the privacy protections you expect from Google, maintaining your data under your control.”

Effective immediately, all Gmail users can utilize Help Me Write for composing emails. An update to Smart Replies, now termed Suggested Replies, is also accessible to everyone. Gmail has unveiled a Proofread tool for grammar, tone, and style, but this is limited to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.

Google additionally published a YouTube video regarding the new AI tools. The top comment on the video states, “Nobody is going to sound human anymore.”

Last year, some Gmail users observed the “Help Me Write” prompt with the sparkle icon linked to AI. Mashable released a guide on how to disable it.
