Stephen Colbert commenced his monologue with a tone that was more serious than typical, addressing the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good by ICE in Minneapolis on Wednesday, along with the response from the Trump administration.
“By now we’ve all seen the footage,” Colbert remarks. “In it, as stated by the New York Times, Good ‘seems to be turning away from a federal officer’, and, as noted by the Washington Post, ‘the agent managed to move aside and fire at least two of the three shots from the side of the vehicle as it passed him.’ It appears that a federal agent shot an American citizen without justification in front of witnesses on a public street. Yet the administration insists that you did not witness that. They claim you observed him reacting to an act of domestic terrorism. They urge you to trust them instead of your own perception.”
Colbert proceeds, indicating that this should serve as a warning for the entire nation, irrespective of political alignment.
“If we allow this to continue, no matter how your state voted, one day you’ll have unaccountable, armed government personnel operating with impunity in your community,” the host asserts. “So peacefully, and without violence, make your leaders aware that you do not desire this.”
In other news, Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Meyers, and Ronny Chieng from The Daily Show have also responded to the shooting.
