In a manner similar to other late-night hosts such as Stephen Colbert, Ronny Chieng, and Seth Meyers, Jimmy Kimmel has addressed the ICE shooting of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis. With a grave demeanor, Kimmel momentarily set aside his typical humor to highlight the gravity of the incident and condemn the Trump administration’s justification of the event.
“Every day brings terrible events,” Kimmel remarked. “There are sad occurrences, tragedies, cruelty, injustice, and so on. In many cases, it’s simply a distressing aspect of existence. But what is one to do when a significant number of individuals, including those governing our nation, claim that the terrible event did not occur? They assert that you’re not perceiving what is undeniably visible. Are you meant to just accept it and carry on?”
Kimmel urged viewers to view the video of the ICE shooting circulating on social media, emphasizing the necessity of awareness to avert future incidents. He also called out President Donald Trump and his supporters for depicting Good, who had just dropped off her six-year-old child at school, as if she were attacking ICE officers as part of a leftist terrorist agenda.
“There was once a standard of truth that seems to have vanished,” Kimmel expressed. “There used to be a standard of decency…. Those times have passed—perhaps not permanently. Hopefully not permanently, but for now, they’re lost….”
“This woman, this unarmed mother—a devout Christian, by the way—who had no criminal history, was driving a Honda Pilot trying to escape armed men in masks in the snow, men who were shouting at her. We’re to assume that this woman was a terrorist executing a terrorist act? And the fact that ICE shot through her windshield three times, that’s her fault?
“The ICE officer was, as [U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security] Kristi Noem described it, ‘following his training,’ which is a testament to how foolish you think we are? That isn’t merely an affront to Renee Good. It’s an affront to every law enforcement officer everywhere. They’re not instructed to behave that way. Once again, I encourage you to view the video yourself.
“And just to clarify, I’m aware that working in law enforcement isn’t simple. I understand that people can err in high-pressure situations, but don’t try to convince me that this adhered to protocol. Apologize, investigate, and ensure that justice is served. I find it hard to believe that even people who support Donald Trump would agree with this, but apparently, they do.”
