Apple has taken a substantial step regarding the future of its AI assistant. In a message shared on X, Google and Apple announced that Google’s Gemini AI models will serve as the basis for Apple Intelligence. This implies that Gemini will underpin upcoming Apple Intelligence functionalities, including the much-anticipated AI enhancement for Siri, scheduled to debut this year.
This development is noteworthy as Apple has previously partnered with various AI models, including ChatGPT. OpenAI’s leading model was integrated with Siri in late 2024 as a temporary measure while Apple developed an AI-augmented iteration of Siri. Nevertheless, in the past year, Gemini has outperformed ChatGPT as the favored model based on several evaluations and rankings. Considering Apple’s delay in AI features in comparison to rivals, it makes sense for the iPhone manufacturer to choose Google’s model over OpenAI’s.
Regrettably, the announcement on X did not include further information regarding the AI Siri upgrade, aside from confirming its release in 2026. It is hoped that the partnership between Apple and Google will soon produce outcomes.
