Google Gemini, the tech behemoth’s generative AI video platform, is rolling out the ability to generate social media-optimized vertical videos. This advancement raises the question: Will it result in even more AI-generated content that lacks quality? Google Veo is acknowledged as the top AI video model, with various iterations occupying the leading four spots on LMArena’s text-to-video ranking, implying the answer is probably yes.
Google revealed this week that Veo 3.1, the newest iteration of Gemini’s text-to-video creator, is now capable of producing “social-ready 9:16 videos straight away.” This indicates the videos are made in the vertical, scroll-friendly format typical of TikTok, YouTube Shorts, and Instagram Reels.
“Tailored for mobile-first uses, this mode provides quicker outcomes and improved composition by generating full-frame vertical video instead of cropping from landscape,” Google stated.
The digital realm is increasingly inundated with AI-generated vertical videos, some of which face criticism for being of poor quality. Meta, for instance, introduced Vibes, a social platform entirely dedicated to generating and scrolling through AI videos, which detractors have labeled an “infinite slop machine.”
It is logical for Google to allow users to produce social-ready videos due to the demand, but it may not necessarily improve your scrolling experience.
