Gossip App Tea Makes a Comeback — But Not Available on the App Store

Tea, a platform where women can converse about the men they date and identify possible “red flags,” is making its comeback today, although it’s not returning to the App Store. Tea forms part of a digital community for women to exchange insights about potential partners, resembling groups on Facebook like “Are We Dating the Same Guy.” Last July, Tea drew criticism when hacks revealed numerous user images and personal details. In October, Apple took down Tea from the App Store due to its inability to meet standards for content moderation and user privacy.

Now, Tea re-emerges as a website: app.teaforwomen.com. Jessica Dees, Tea’s vice president of trust and safety, noted that they have implemented improved safety and security protocols, including internal protections, access restrictions, and monitoring systems to ensure sensitive data is safeguarded and responsible engagement is encouraged.

Dees highlighted that the relaunch aims to enhance and broaden access to Tea’s safety and verification resources while maintaining responsibility. Following the incidents, Tea worked with third-party security experts to analyze the breaches and instituted additional security measures.

Screenshots of the website provided to Mashable display an Instagram-like aesthetic, showcasing photos of men paired with captions regarding women’s experiences, along with commentary and reactions depicted as green or red flags.

For Android users, Tea has remained accessible through Google Play despite its absence from the App Store and is still available for download. Tea has unveiled fresh community functionalities for the Android application, such as an “elevated” forum experience featuring interactive areas and a built-in AI dating coach. The conversations with the AI dating coach are private and secure, with a forthcoming feature designed to evaluate the dynamics of a dating app chat.

Online whisper networks, frequently spearheaded by women, have surfaced in the dating app landscape as users come across negative encounters, ranging from scammers to assaulters. These networks are not likely to fade away, but it remains to be seen whether women will return to Tea following last year’s incidents.
