There exists a scene in *Fallout* Season 2 that may not be an explicit tribute to the late, legendary David Lynch, but it certainly feels like one. In the premiere episode of this season, there’s a brief moment that *Twin Peaks* enthusiasts might find surprisingly uplifting amidst the desolation of the Wasteland. And it features a remarkably fine cup of coffee.
Later in Season 2, episode 1 of the television adaptation of Bethesda’s *Fallout* series, we are introduced to the ex-overseer of Vault 33, Hank MacLean (Kyle MacLachlan), who has traversed the Nevada desert clad in T-60 power armor to arrive at an enormous subterranean Vault-Tec tower. The place is utterly lifeless, a quiet remnant of an immaculate office structure.
Hank is faced with over 400,000 unread messages — it’s been at least two centuries since they were last checked. Seeking some caffeine and with his golden Pip Boy secured, Hank brews a pot of coffee and takes a sip — and if you don’t believe that MacLachlan’s character is on the verge of stating that it’s a “damn fine cup of coffee,” you ought to watch more *Twin Peaks*.
In this moment, MacLachlan could indeed be honoring his longtime friend and *Twin Peaks*/*Blue Velvet*/*Dune* director, who passed away at the age of 78 this January. The actor has been closely associated with that phrase since portraying Agent Dale Cooper in Lynch’s landmark mystery series. The FBI special agent emphasizes taking a moment for his daily coffee ritual, treating himself to a daily delight while probing into chilling crimes, favoring “two cups of good, hot black coffee” for his pleasure.
While Hank doesn’t actually say these words, despite the subtle “say the line, Bart” hints, there is undoubtedly a smile and a moment of pause — ample for Lynch aficionados to complete the iconic line in their minds.
